SATREPS is a collaborative research program between the Government of Indonesia and the Government of Japan that aims to:

The program is jointly coordinated by:

Government of Japan: MOFA, JICA, MEXT, JST (for non-health topics), and AMED (for infectious disease topics).
Government of Indonesia: The program is coordinated jointly by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) through the Directorate of Research and Innovation Funding, and the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas), as the official counterpart to the Government of Japan under the Official Development Assistance (ODA) framework.

Environment and Energy, Research related to climate change, ecosystem conservation, sustainable energy, and pollution control.
Bioresources, Research on sustainable production and utilization of biological resources (agriculture, fisheries, nutrition, etc.).
Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Research to prevent and mitigate natural disasters, covering pre-disaster, disaster response, and post-disaster recovery.
Infectious Diseases Control (managed by AMED), Research addressing infectious diseases in line with developing country needs.

SATREPS is fully funded by the Government of Japan through JICA and JST/AMED.
JICA supports activities in Indonesia (e.g. Japanese researcher travel, equipment, training).
JST/AMED funds only the Japanese research team for their activities in Japan and abroad.
No funds are provided directly to Indonesian researchers or institutions.
Indonesian side is encouraged to provide matching support, especially for operational needs in Indonesia.
BRIN offers the RIIM Kompetisi Scheme as a potential matching fund. Please note that the RIIM Kompetisi Scheme is not automatically granted for SATREPS-awarded projects; it remains a separate, competitive process. This fund can support local consumables, domestic logistics, and honoraria for field staff (e.g. enumerators), but not for researchers.

The typical Japanese funding support ranges around JPY 100–150 million per project over a period of 3–5 years.
Indonesian co-funding amount is flexible, depending on project needs

Researchers affiliated with BRIN or Indonesian universities.
Led by a Principal Investigator (PI) with a Doctoral degree (Ph.D.).
Demonstrated research track record and collaboration experience with Japanese researchers.
Must have an established partnership with a Japanese research institution (supported by MoU or correspondence).

Proposal (Application Form for Technical Cooperation) written in English, signed by the PI.
Attachments must include: CVs of the PI and team members (in the provided format). Copy of the MoU (if available). Proof of communication with the Japanese counterpart.
Applicants must secure or apply for matching funds (e.g., via RIIM Competition or other schemes).

Proposal must align with one or more of the SATREPS priority areas.
Research should demonstrate potential societal benefit, not solely academic outcomes.
Objectives and methodology should be specific and realistically achievable within the project period.
Research should contribute to advancing science and technology in both countries.
Expected outcomes should offer social and economic value at local and/or global levels.
